International Women's Day 2014 : Inspiring Aspiring Women in Agriculture :Chicken Farming Edition (+playlist)

Following on from my last post I want to talk about how we can increase women's participation in agriculture particularly young women. Many times I will talk about agriculture and its benefits to other young people and they will look at me in shock and say You can't be a farmer! . You don't look like a farmer?! .
Sadly the typical perception of a farmer is someone who has bad credit ,is uneducated and is constantly toiling the land in the mud ,working long hours and seeing little financial improvement in their lives .This is a very dim outlook indeed.

We need to change this perception the world over! particularly in developing countries and regions like the Caribbean. We need to inspire women and girls to aspire to a better future for themselves and equip them to achieve their dreams .

The video above done by UNWOMEN shows how they have created training programmes in commercial chicken farming especially to empower women in Kenya . There are many testimonials giving women hope to continue their businesses and for those who may be thinking about getting into chicken farming it shows that it is possible. I love the video because it shows that with drive ,education, guidance, proper record keeping and support women can move from subsistence farming to commercial farming and successfully empower themselves and each other .The key is starting small and scaling up the business to suit the markets needs !! Ladies if we can dream it we can do it !!
